How to become an accountant in the UK?

How to become an accountant in the UK?
I am currently studying my A-levels and am doing Graphic Design, maths and drama. I'll probably acheive an A in drama, B in Graphics and hopfully a B in maths. I would like to study at Exeter, Bath or Bristol Uni, but im not sure whether to study maths or accountancy. You have to get higher results to study maths. Does it really matter which subject i study? Also, is it best to go to Uni, or will a company take me on and train me up after my A-levels? Thankyou

Answer 1 :
i think if you want to work for a well established company then i'd suggest you get your degree from a reputable university
Answer 2 :
IF you're looking to do accountancy, I'd say it's definitely worth looking into a company. I've got a friend who's done something similar, and gone straight into a company. The good thing about that is you basically get training on the job, go through all your exams and you've already got a job. I suppose the downside could be getting tailored to that specific company. I'd suggest you look at some companies out there and see what sounds more attractive to you, it it's straight studying, or learning on the job. If you want to go big, the big 4 accounting companies would probably offer a very good course (KPMG, Ernst and Young, Delloite, PWC).
Answer 3 :
If you can get an apprenticeship with a local company you might be able to get trained up on the job - go to your connexions service as they will know of any local opportunities in this field. If you live in/around London go to www.lois.uk.net for these kind of vacancies. If you want to be an accountant either maths or accountancy would suffice - i believe you need to then do additional training afterwards...go to www.prospects.ac.uk, then go to 'jobs and work' then 'explore different types of jobs' - you can search all about getting into accountancy or any different types of jobs. By the way, how much have you narrowed down your ideas? I'd want to know why you chose graphic design and drama (quite creative subjects) if you want to be an accountant - if you haven't already I'd suggest you get a careers guidance interview through connexions if you have any doubts at all that accountancy is for you.
Answer 4 :
If you think you're going to get a B in Maths, I'd avoid doing a Maths degree (especially at Bath/Bristol as both are regarded as very hard Maths courses). Most accountancy firms are fine with any numerate degree, so having Maths doesn't matter too much.

I'm a self employer (a plumber ) all my paperwork is at hand so it shouldn't be more than 1-2 hurs of work. i already did all calculation and expenses . can anyone recommend me someone?

Ask around your self employed mates and see who is available locally in the Yellow Pages or Thompsons if that is all you want done. You may be able to get away with a bookeeper if you just want it finalised. Cheap is not always the answer. Cheap is not creative on allowances and extras and knowing how to do it for your trade.

Relevantly you need an hnc qualified to assess an accountants starting wage they can vary from 15,000 a year to 30,000 dependant on the employer and the levels of qualifications and expierence you may have assuming you stick at the career to aspire to be an accountant. Personally if you look at courses for colleges locally uni, and try looking at fitting something into your schedule if your working and want to do a part time course, also dependant on your income aswell.
Answer 2 :
Accountants generally have a bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance, although the degree is not strictly required. I've also worked with accountants who had degrees in Mathematic and Computer Science. There are associates degrees in accounting that will let you work as a Junior Accountant, Accounts Payable Clerk, or other lower wage accounting positions and work your way up to higher accounting positions. Junior positions start at around 30k. You can research how increased experience will effect wages by going to http://www.bls.gov (the government website of the Bureau of Labor and Statistics).

do i need an accountant and a partner if i want to create an ltd?
i want to open an ltd, i searched the web and found that there should be 2 people to create it... and i'm not sure if i need an accountant... what if it is a small company? and what if it grows? p.s. i want to create a ltd by myself, with no partners... and what if i do not need an accountant? what should i do to follow the law? how much does an accountant costs? monthly/yearly...
Small Business - 4 Answers

Answer 1 :
To start a legal partnership (Ltd, LLP, LP) it is VERY helpful to have an accountant. Unless you can prepare the Form 1065, Schedule B and Schedule K-1 on your own during tax time, then you will definitely need an accountant. Also you should get some consultation from a lawyer as to how to set up a limited company since you may acquire partners later on.
Answer 2 :
yes, you need an accountant, and its advisable to get one so that you are claiming all you should be No -you don't need a partner, my son has an LTD company and works for himself,
Answer 3 :
You do not need an accountant to set up a limited company, but unless you know exactly what you are doing it is very wise to. It is possible to buy companies online, but often there are problems with previous directors and the articles. It used to be the case that you needed two directors, one of whom acted as company secretary, but this is no longer the case and now you only need to have one director. One question I feel you should ask is why you want to have a limited company. A good accountant will be able to advise you on all the options available to you and could avoid you making a costly mistake. I hope this is helpful to you, Karen Turl AFA UK Tax Accountant
Answer 4 :
No you do not need an accountant nor do you need another director. Those days are gone. To follow the law well, that is where you may wish to consider employing an agent. Your agent is there to guide you and keep you compliant with regards all aspects of your tax affairs. Indeed they can really help with your business needs also especially if your company grows. Fee;s normally are related to the amount of work involved and therefore its hard to say. A smallish company employing 2-5 people doing VAT, and Employee returns, preparing accounts for submission, well approx 1500-2500 but it can vary. Look, arrange an appointment with an agent in your area, explain the business and they will give you a guide to both the aspects concerning compliance and their costs and take it from there. But No you are not obliged to have an accountant or another person involved but I would strongly suggest you consider the accountant. Tax Doctor

Answer 1 :
You should complete your graduation first like B.Com. Then try Chartered Accountancy or Cost Accountancy. Contact those Institutes whether Intermediate qualification is enough for starting their preliminary course. You can visit their local chapters in your place,
Answer 2 :
Ok right you have to take the AAT course which will take 3 years and then you can either go to a accounting firm where they will train you to become a fully qualified accountant or you can stay at college and take the next level which will again make you a fully qualified accountant.
Answer 3 :
You can't be a professional accountant without taking the professional exams. There are no short-cuts. Various universities have degrees that are accredited by the major professional bodies: CIMA, ACCA, etc. Most professional qualifications are designed to be taken part time, by people working in the profession - it will never be quick. Get in touch with each body to find out the various routes through their qualifications. You also need to seriously and objectively assess you intellectual capability. This will enable you to select the qualification at the right level. The scale is something like this: AAT (lowest), then ACCA / CIMA, with ICAEW highest. Difficulty is linked to level.

i have a criminal record can i still apply for the job of an accountant?
its been 4 years since i have been convicted can i still have a job as an accountant
Law & Legal - 7 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Of course you can still apply. But if you're wondering what the chances of getting the job are, I'm not sure.
Answer 2 :
Apply but your chances will be slim
Answer 3 :
You can but your CV will be less attractive then the other applicants. people that have a criminal record tend to start small and work their to the top beacuse it would be really impossible to just start at the middle or top with a criminal record
Answer 4 :
I know that in the insurance industry, only a conviction of fraud can totally disqualify you. As it was explained to me by the head of HR background security for a Fortune 500 insurance company: "a person convicted of manslaughter can get hired, but a conviction for ID theft or writing bad checks is automatically barred from the job". I suspect accounting would be more or less the same; they don't care if you stole a car or punched out a cop when you were 20, but write one bad check and you have a problem. It all revolves around the nature of the offense.
Answer 5 :
Depends, there are criminal records and there are criminal records. Get involved in a punch up outside a nightclub after a few drinks and you could be arrested and charged with Affray. You would have a criminal record but an easily explained one that probably would not be too much of a hindrance. On the other hand any offence concerning dishonesty of any type and despite what some people might say to boost your confidence, will see your CV go straight in the bin for any accountancy job. One thing an accountant has to be is honest. All employers in the accountancy field will do a CRB check before hiring so such a conviction could not be hidden. The real problem you face at the moment, and probably for the fore see able future, is that there are huge numbers of people out there chasing few job openings. This means employers can be choosy and you need to both have relevant experience and a squeaky clean record to be in the running. I know that is probably not what you want to hear but that is the real bottom line.
Answer 6 :
You should consider applying for a criminal pardon.
Answer 7 :
What was the conviction for? Theft or other monetary crimes will probably eliminate you as a candidate.

Absolutely. Accountacy is one of the few professions where they care more about your work experience than your academic achievements. Get into an accountancy firm that will sponsor and support you for your exams and you will do very very well! Good luck!
Answer 2 :
Easy as pie
Answer 3 :
Serious answer for a change here:- My work Colleague is studying to take A.T.A...home study(well at work hahaha) i think it is,he hasn`t been to University...we both work at a university(believe it or not!) on Security
Answer 4 :
You can enter the accounting profession without a degree. It just depends on the level at which you hope to operate. My friend works as an accountant without a degree. He took the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification on day-release from his job with the council. He could have gone on to study for the CIPFA exams but didn't see any advantage for him personally. His career has probably reached its peak. The most successful and well paid accountants I know (in private practice in a couple of the 'Big 4' firms) entered the profession as graduates with degrees in non-accounting subjects. This showed their potential to the future employer. They enjoy a huge variety of work assignments and have a tempting career path provided they maintain the stamina.

Well, practice makes perfect!
Answer 2 :
Yahh u got to be good to become an accountant or purchase ledger. Because in those jobs u basically do maths all day. so if ur not good in maths this is not the right job 4 u
Answer 3 :
yes i do. but accounting is more about analyzing than math itself!
Answer 4 :
nope i am not good in math. You should just have good excel knowledge. No one counts cash anymore.
Answer 5 :
It would definitely make things easier. Math skills are pretty much a given for those. If you're not good at math, why would you want to do either one? (Not judging, just curious.)
Answer 6 :
Well, you need a good grasp of maths I think. Obviously you would have a calculator but you still need to have amind for it! I am studying taxation etc. at present and without the basic knowledge I'd be lost!
Answer 7 :
Its a good idea to be but i was never top of the class in maths at school and that didn't stop me from working my way up in an accounts company when i left high school. Try and find a placement as a junior apprentice to see if you can cope with the work load then you can decide for yourself, good luck xx
Answer 8 :
You can't be a purchase ledger because it is a book or a computer programme. You can be a book-keeper. You do need to be good at arithmetic and the same applies to being an accountant.
Answer 9 :
You are SO right! That is a dumb questions, but it's not rocket science.
Answer 10 :
Basic math is necessary although a lot of technology can do the stuff you need for these jobs

it would be a good thing since your adding things

what qualifications are needed to become a charted accountant?

what qualifications are needed to become a charted accountant?

Other - Business & Finance - 1 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
You need to pass the exams with the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). To sit these you must be working for an approved firm of accountants (often the bigger ones) throughout your studies. These firms will usually require you to either have a degree in accounting first or some other qualification in accounting such as the AAT. So, you're looking at three years (degree or AAT) then a further three years to achieve ACA whilst working full time. This only applies to the term Chartered Accountant - there are other kinds of accountants that take other routes but they cannot call themselves chartered.

Are you and accountant or accounting technician?
What steps did you take to become them? So far im on... NVQ Level 2 in Accounting then Level 3 then Level 4 which is Accounting Technician.
Higher Education (University +) - 1 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
But i'm pretty certain that this is just a foundation (level 4). In order for you to be a qualified accountant, you will need to be certified in either of the following: ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA, ICAS or CIPFA . As an Accounting Technician, you are limited as to the types of jobs you can get. At the moment im in my second year at uni doing Acc & Finance. After completing this i will be eligible for exemptions to 8 or 9 ACCA papers. If all you want to be is an accounting technician, then the NVQ Level 4 is fine, however if you would like to become a chartered/management accountant, then you would have to apply for the ICAEW, ACCA, etc. I have a family member who is an ACCA certified accountant and they took all 15 ACCA papers without any exemptions. The UK govt website states {Starting salaries at foundation and intermediate levels can be around £14,000 to £18,000 a year. Once qualified to technician level, salaries can be up to £25,000.} However, once qualified in any of the ICAEW, ACCA, etc. and working as an auditor then the site states (Part-qualified salaries can be between £18,000 and £25,000 a year. Once qualified, earnings are usually around £30,000 to £45,000. Senior and management salaries can be between £50,000 and £70,000.} Good Luck!

Engineering - 5 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
I have 2 points to make. 1. It is difficult but possible to be both at the same time. 2. If you do both, which are you determined to be? employers love determination
Answer 2 :
You might have the theory but you would probably have to start at the bottom of the work ladder again. Also you might find it hard for an employer to take you on. And studying to be an accountant will also take more years on top of your degree, so think carefully about your choice of career.
Answer 3 :
I have known civil engineers who have gained accountancy qualifications, but it hasn't done them any good. I have also known accountants who think they are capable of doing anything in other fields, but they were wrong as well! You cannot be at the top of two professions at once. Education is only part of what you need to progress up a career ladder, motivation, experience and determination are other qualities you need. I would suggest focus on the one field you are best at and look to extend with an MBA.
Answer 4 :
Same answer as before..... I am sure you asked this before and this is the answer that I gave. This is getting to be one of my pet hates on here - people asking the same question again, and again and again..... No reason why you can't do that. However - and there often is a however with these questions.... If you worked as a chartered accountant say 10 years before you decide to work as a civil engineer a few things will happen. In 10 years as a chartered accountant you will have passed your Professional exams and this means that you will be earning quite good money. Now go to be a graduate civil engineer (no experience so you start at the bottom of the rung again), your take home pay will drop quite a bit (over £10k). You might struggle to actually get jobs - a look at your CV will show that you are an accountant and engineering firms will probably want an engineer with engineering more at the front of their mind. Certainly it is possible. However a better course of action might be to decide which you want to do first and train for that, work at that until you want to change and then spend the 3 or 4 years re-training. That way you will have the engineering knowledge in the front of your mind and be able to sell yourself better. Now as for getting a well paid civil engineering job as a new graduate.... that is another thing and quite a rare job to find - you start at the bottom with all careers until you get experience to earn more money. When I have read your multiple identical questions - you were looking for jobs that paid £100k after a while - neither will do that unless you are the best. £25k is a bit on the high side for a starting salary for both - £20k might be a more realistic proposition
Answer 5 :
There is absolutely no reson why you can't have two professional qualifications. I know people who are teachers and lawyers, doctors and biochemists, and many other combinations but you will have to decide which is your major profession and you will need to qualify in both. A degree alone in engineering is unlikely to be a lot of help to a chartered accountant. It would be difficult to launch an engineering career with a degree in accountancy. I think you would need to become a chartered engineer and pursue accountancy in your spare time. You might find a niche for an engineer (probably civil) with an accountancy qualification. Finance director in an engineering company? Project controller on large civil contracts? Or just forget both and become a Quanitity Surveyor.

if i hav a degree in statistics, what would be the next step to be an accountant?
is it on job training or more uni study>?
Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers

You might be better off in the field of marketing analysis rather than accounting. Accountant just deals with financial transactions that have already happened where you already have some training on analyzing how to improve sales, etc. But if your sticking to be an accountant, you should take the obvious accounting courses, some computer courses, and economics.
Answer 2 :
In the United States -- statistics won't do you a bit of good. They are completely different fields of study. In most states, you have to have an undergraduate degree that covers auditing, financial accounting, management accounting, professional ethics, and taxation, as well as business courses other than accounting courses, before you can even sit for the CPA exam.

high high high grades in maths
Answer 2 :
Yes you do. You can study accounting as a vocational degree, or through CPA. Check out your options here http://www.aicpa.org/ You need to have good attention to detail, and numeracy. Accountancy is a great profession - you can even do it from home if you want a family.
Answer 3 :
A Level GCSE and thats propably the main one you need to focus on
Answer 4 :
While one ought to have a degree - you do not need any qualifications at all. In the UK, 'accountant' is not a protected term, and anyone may call themselves an accountant. This is worrying, as there are many individuals who set up shop as accountant, without the knowledge to properly serve their customers. When choosing an accountant, always look for a Chartered Accountant - this *is* a protected term, and so ensures the quality of the service provided. So in short -to be an accountant, you do not need a single qualification.

Journey of an IT professional to become Chartered Accountant?

Journey of an IT professional to become Chartered Accountant?
Hi everyone, I am an IT professional in London and want to become a qualified chartered accountant. Currently discovering more and more information about this. I think I am going to choose ICAEW or ICAS route than the others such as ACCA. Ideally I am trying to get into a graduate programme of any company so that I am being paid while I am learning. Any advice and information that you have may would be gratefully received. I have also created an online diary/blog where I enter information as I receive. This helps me. Also being online and open to public others may benefit from that as well. It can be accessed at: http://uk.360.yahoo.com/moreliens I look forward to hearing from you guys. Many thanks moreliens The reason I am planning to move is perhaps because right after graduation I started working for a small charity. I enjoy working there but career development and training opportunites are next to nothing. This has resulted in me bit out of date in skills. Also, the salary is not great so I will not lose much if I start graduate programme with Accounting as their salaries tend to be 20-25K plus.
