How to become an accountant in the UK?
I am currently studying my A-levels and am doing Graphic Design, maths and drama. I'll probably acheive an A in drama, B in Graphics and hopfully a B in maths. I would like to study at Exeter, Bath or Bristol Uni, but im not sure whether to study maths or accountancy. You have to get higher results to study maths. Does it really matter which subject i study? Also, is it best to go to Uni, or will a company take me on and train me up after my A-levels? Thankyou

i think if you want to work for a well established company then i'd suggest you get your degree from a reputable university

IF you're looking to do accountancy, I'd say it's definitely worth looking into a company. I've got a friend who's done something similar, and gone straight into a company. The good thing about that is you basically get training on the job, go through all your exams and you've already got a job. I suppose the downside could be getting tailored to that specific company. I'd suggest you look at some companies out there and see what sounds more attractive to you, it it's straight studying, or learning on the job. If you want to go big, the big 4 accounting companies would probably offer a very good course (KPMG, Ernst and Young, Delloite, PWC).

If you can get an apprenticeship with a local company you might be able to get trained up on the job - go to your connexions service as they will know of any local opportunities in this field. If you live in/around London go to www.lois.uk.net for these kind of vacancies. If you want to be an accountant either maths or accountancy would suffice - i believe you need to then do additional training afterwards...go to www.prospects.ac.uk, then go to 'jobs and work' then 'explore different types of jobs' - you can search all about getting into accountancy or any different types of jobs. By the way, how much have you narrowed down your ideas? I'd want to know why you chose graphic design and drama (quite creative subjects) if you want to be an accountant - if you haven't already I'd suggest you get a careers guidance interview through connexions if you have any doubts at all that accountancy is for you.

If you think you're going to get a B in Maths, I'd avoid doing a Maths degree (especially at Bath/Bristol as both are regarded as very hard Maths courses). Most accountancy firms are fine with any numerate degree, so having Maths doesn't matter too much.

Cheap Accountant / I am searching for cheap accountant to fill in my tax 2010/2011?
I'm a self employer (a plumber ) all my paperwork is at hand so it shouldn't be more than 1-2 hurs of work. i already did all calculation and expenses . can anyone recommend me someone?

Ask around your self employed mates and see who is available locally in the Yellow Pages or Thompsons if that is all you want done. You may be able to get away with a bookeeper if you just want it finalised. Cheap is not always the answer. Cheap is not creative on allowances and extras and knowing how to do it for your trade.

Accountants earn a good living but the big dollars come with picking the right opportunity and developing a career. You wont be a millionare in your first year. Most general managers have accounting degrees.
