Should I be an Accountant or Teacher? Really stuck?

Should I be an Accountant or Teacher? Really stuck?
I really love maths and love everything about Accounting, though I also like teaching, (don't wanna teach accounting) more Art, weird What should I do, both have their pros and cons, What would YOU Pick, & Why?
Teaching - 5 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Why not do both., You could become and accountant and then teach. I am an accountant, I'm currently attending school for my MBA. This way I'll be able to teach at colleges as well.
Answer 2 :
Be a teacher! You get great holidays and it's really rewarding at times. But beware - it's VERY hard work, demanding and exhausting. But everyday is different and you'll never get bored. It's also one of those careers that allows you to travel to any part of the world you want; I'm in Egypt now, but people I know are everywhere in the world. And if you do go abroad to teach, you don't have to pay tax. If your in the UK too, the teachers' pension is one of the best you can sign up to.
Answer 3 :
OMG i never thought i would know someone with the same problem - i dnt no whether to be a teacher or accountant - but i have gone with teacher becuase its more money, rewarding job, holidays, love kids so i choose teaching. gd luck
Answer 4 :
It is true that teaching has good holidays, but it is a great deal of work, too. If you like working with people then teaching might be for you. If you can be happy working in an office primarily by yourself then perhaps accounting is your calling.
Answer 5 :
An Accountant because it is the highest paid job around!

That level of qualification is okay but there are many of them and they are not all good in practice. hence the economic mess we are in.

An accountant is a valuable asset to any company, but having an accountant of whatever qualification is only one part of a team. A skilled workforce, economic production techniques and a marketable product are of much more importance

What GCSEs for a accountant?

What GCSEs for a accountant?
Hi, I'm in year 9 and approaching my GCSEs. When I'm older i would really like to be a accountant. At my school we do core science, english, maths and P.E. Im thinking about do statistics and business. What GCSEs do you suggest for a accountant?
Standards & Testing - 2 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
hi :) Im in year 12; i did my GCSEs last year :) generally, your subjects at GCSE wont prevent you get any jobs; most unis and jobs ask for 5 A-C grades, induding Maths and English, so I wouldnt worry about the particualar subjects. However, statistics seems like a good idea, business would be good too. Maths definatly. Maybe economics. btw, i do statistics at A Level, and it is not easy. At all. You will have to work hard, but you sound like you will :) the other thing is make sure that you dont limit your range of subjects. what i mean is, you are only in year 9, so keep your options open! Since as long as I can remember, I have had my heart set on doing Graphic Design. That was what I wanted to do, I didnt contmplate anything else, and I didnt listen when people said I might change my mind. So, i took art and DT at GCSE, which was one of the biggest mistakes of my school life. I thought I liked these subjects, but the sheer amount of work and the pressure, put me off them, and I now want to go into a more technical side of IT. what im saying is that thought i wouldnt change my mind, but i did. Im not saying this will happen to you, but it very well could, so bare it in mind! anyway, good luck with your GCSE studies, work hard and dont worry too much about your subjects at this level! also, have a look at this site; http://www.connexions-direct.com/jobs4u/index.cfm?pid=50&catalogueContentID=268 it might give you a bit more info :) hope I helped! :)
Answer 2 :
I am an accountant, and I did GCSEs in Maths, English Lan, English Lit, Double Science, History Geography, PE, German and Information Technology. I also did AS Levels in Statistics and Pure Mathematics as maths GCSE was sat 2 years early. I then went to college for AS Levels in Human Biology and German and A Levels in PE, Maths, English Combined and Law. The easiest way to get into accounting is to obviously make sure that you are capable at maths, and other subjects that would aid with this would be business studies, economics, statistics and law. The law is one that many people forget, however the contract law is very useful to get a base level knowledge of. You don't have to go to university to study accountancy, if possible, an option is to get work in a accountancy practice and from there you can study for the AAT qualification (not compulsory but recommended), and then the ACCA examinations. Even if you go to university, you only get exemptions from some of the ACCA examinations. It is therefore up to you if you want to go to university for the experience knowing you still have to do exams. I did, and I don't regret it one bit.

I live in Knottingley,so Castleford,Pontefract,Wakefield,Leeds (East or City Centre preferably but open to any other offers), and any other reasonably nearby location would be suitable. I am 23 years old and am AAT qualified and professionally taught SAGE line 50. I also have an excellent knowledge of Excel and Word. My salary expectations are £19-22,000. Where did the phrase,"the smiling assassin",refers to accountants, come from?

Where did the phrase,"the smiling assassin",refers to accountants, come from?
Ah, the smiling assassin, he can prove anything with figures. It refers to an accountant or such like, is it a quote or what
Words & Wordplay - 3 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
I have heard the term used for many different professions & people, but it all means the same thing. They are smiling while they are 'killing you', be it with figures, words or otherwise
Answer 2 :
I always thought it was lawyers and politicians
Answer 3 :
I've never heard that particular quote before, but it's meaning is rather obvious. An assassin is one who kills people. If an accountant has a grudge and wants to make someone he works for look really bad, he can "cook the books" so that they really look as though his boss has been stealing money from the company, even though it isn't true. In this way, he might kill his bosses chances of remaining in his job, or the boss may possibly even go to jail, even though he is innocent. The accountant sits there "smiling" to himself because he got revenge on his boss by "assassinating" his bosses' good, honest reputation. Thus, he has become a "character assassin" who performed a "character assassination."

Anyone know average salaries for tv production accountants&how you would go about getting a first break?
I'm interested in entering this field but can't find much info on it - is there much work available? What would average salaries be like for a qualified accountant? Thanks!
Careers & Employment - 3 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
It depends on the location. Go to yahoo hotjobs http://hotjobs.yahoo.com and click on career tools, then Salary. (or just click here: http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/salary ) You should be able to find the info you are looking for.
Answer 2 :
yeah about 3 gazillion US dollars in British sterling that's about 1.5 gazillion its good salary if you are prepared to work for it. If I hadn't of gone to oxford university, I would not have got that promotion and now I'm earning 2000000000000000000000000000000000 million a year, it really is the sweet life.
Answer 3 :
The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career. Is this normal accountant behaviour?

Is this normal accountant behaviour?
My husband and I recently changed our accountant to save on bills. We had our last meeting with him (for now) last Wednesday where he finalised our accounts. Yesterday I had an email from him asking whether his cheque was in the post yet. Of course we intended to pay him sometime later this month as we'd always done with the previous guy, but we thought this demand was a bit premature and rude. Do you?
Other - Business & Finance - 5 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Most accountants are terrible at chasing up bills. I'm just now looking down a list of clients who owe me money and who I need to send reminder letters to. What's just happened to you is certainly not normal, but maybe he's just going through his list as well and chasing everyone he's billed. Most accountants now say in their engagement or terms of business letter that bills are due "on presentation" rather than the usual thirty days - but there are fewer who take that seriously.
Answer 2 :
If you didnt pay him when you agreed to pay him, hes within his rights and the rules of rudeness to ask you for the money.
Answer 3 :
Maybe this accountant has his suspicions of why you left the other bloke and it will take time of paying him pay for service until he trusts you also your financial details may show a lack of readily available money for normal bill paying so he is making sure he gets in first good luck I'm sure your honesty will cure him
Answer 4 :
I not only find it rude, I find it unnecessary. He could have billed you if after a certain amount of time had passed, but today, everyone seems to be so money grubbing, they can't wait three seconds to go by without asking for something. In due time, you would have paid him!
Answer 5 :
well yeah especially if he didn't talk to you about his payment in any of your meetings... a bit presumptious of him but just write back/ring him asking how much and tell him he'll receive it at the end of the month like you planned....after all he is working for you therefore you have the power to decide when to pay him if it hasn't been discussed

what does an accountant do?
im really good at maths and thinking of doing an accountant degree but not really a clue what it is lol
Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
If you get your accounting degree, you are most likely going to go the CPA route. With that you would go into either tax or auditing financial statements. With Tax you basically just do taxes, and with auditing you will be out at different clients with a team and audit their financial statements and all of their other numbers. You can also choose to specialize in Information Systems, which is what I did. I think it is a lot better than going the CPA route because you don't have to go through the extra schooling or pass the CPA test (which is killer). We also start out at a higher salary than CPA's. When I got my offer it was $55,000 compared to my friend's offer (with a Master's degree and CPA exam passed) she only received $48,000. IT is a new field and I think it will grow at a tremendous rate! Good luck!
Answer 2 :
Accounting is the field of tracking, monitoring and auditing financial transactions of a business or organization. In a business, accountants may be responsible for bookkeeping, auditing, payroll, and tax compliance.

You will need to be able to pass the government licensing examinations. you will get THOSE skills in a University
Answer 3 :
YES! No Tom, Dick or Harry can just walk into a job like that.
Answer 4 :
Yes, you have to.
Answer 5 :
No you don't actually. A degree is not needed to become a chartered accountant - all it does is exempt you from a few of the exams. It is quite an expensive thing to train for though so most people try to get a position with a firm that will pay for the training. Some firms like their trainees to have an accountancy degree, some aren't bothered. Of course, you can also become an accountant in industry and not need to be chartered. There are plenty of those around who are classed as 'qualified by experience'.

No, you'll have no problem finding a job (depending on your market of course). As to whether you'll like it or not- that, my friend, is one of those questions only you can answer. Good luck.
Answer 2 :
dont let anyone stop you dreams, be what u want xxx
Answer 3 :
If you are detail oriented, like every penny in its place, and don't mind doing the same tasks over an over again, you may like it - on the other hand, if you don't mind when things are off, or you need excitement every day, I wouldn't go into the accounting industry.
Answer 4 :
Good luck, accounting often gets a poor press, but I trained as an architect in the 90's, then re-focused my life and trained as an accountant in the 00's, I'm now practising and enjoying the different aspects of the job. Why don't you contact a couple of your local accounting companies, to see if they would let you spend a few days through the school holidays, to get an idea of the profession, and enable you to make an informed decision for your future.

do you have to be registered, to be an accountant?

do you have to be registered, to be an accountant?
i seem to have the knack for doing self assessments etc., and would like to help others. do i need to be registered? i would charge a small fee! for the past few years i have been doing my husbands accounts and every year we have had a very pleasing tax result. i would just like to help others (all above board i add!) i did start a home study course in basic book keeping. and i just enjoy doing them (sad!)
United Kingdom - 3 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
no, but you need a 4 yr college degree in accounting to be anything more than an accounting clerk (2 yr degree min for that) I don;t know what self-assessments has to do with accounting
Answer 2 :
Hiya this may help.... I am self-employed and i do accounts and book-keeping. I do work for both individuals and i also have companies/ accountancy practises that give me work. I have gained all my experience from a very successful accountant who has taught me everything i know. You don't need any specific qualifications to do what i do HOWEVER you obviously need to know what you are doing and prove that you know what you are doing. Keep going with the book-keeping course and then advertise for some VAT work or book-keeping work as there is a big difference between a book-keeper and an accountant. If you definately want to go down the accountancy route then do the AAT qualification. Most colleges offer this course and it is usually over 1-2 evenings per week for 3 years. Some colleges also do it for one day a week if this would suit you better. If you need anymore advice then feel free to add me as a friend and then contact me. Good luck!
Answer 3 :
No, you don't need to be registered to do bookkeeping or tax work, as long as you don't advertise yourself as a qualified accountant, of course. Technically, people you advise could sue you if you get it wrong, so professional indemnity insurance should be considered if you start doing a lot and/or start giving people tax planning advice. But just helping people with their tax returns (as I do) shouldn't cause you any grief, so carry on!

Answer 1 :
Not if its what you feel you want to do with your life. If you want to be an accountant, then by all means, be one. If you don't like the idea. then of course actually being an accountant isn't the way to go!
Answer 2 :
I've heard that it is very repetitive, but it depends on what you enjoy doing. Do you enjoy Maths? I want to be an accountant, but if it's not the right job it can be very boring.
Answer 3 :
dont know about boring but it pays well i would be bored wouldnt you lol!!!!!!!!!!!
Answer 4 :
number crunching is boring at times but there are a hell of alot worse jobs out there.
Answer 5 :
It's not always boring regardless of what some people out there think. Try being an accountant in an industry that you would find interesting. For example, an advertising agency or film studio, or a music publishing company where you can really see what you are costing etc and the finished product?? Lots of people find their jobs boring but need to work to live. If you enjoy accountancy then go for it and good luck to you. xx
Answer 6 :
Depends on whether its what you want to do with your life! Excellent money if you become fully qualified (chartered)
Answer 7 :
I would say yes. But if you like Maths then that's fine. Most of all, it's a well-paid position :)

Which is a better career option: Tax Accountant or Trader?

Financial Services - 1 Answers

If you mean stock trader or day trader or equity trader, then it depends on your dedication to the job, and your talents and ability to analyze the situation. I know a guy who made about $300,000 over a year or two when the Dow was sliding from about 14,000 to 6,000. When it turned and went up to about 8,000, he lost most of it. I see CPAs who are doing very well in all sorts of markets. When people make money, they need someone to track it for them. When they are losing money, they want to know why. Either way, a good accountant can make money. I suspect the difference is that the trader has the potential to make more of it, but it's riskier. What's your risk tolerance?

Avarage UK accountant prices?

Avarage UK accountant prices?
I have a quote from an accountant: 1 hour: £50 VAT registration (sole trader): £150 1 Year sole trader (no VAT yet) tax return: £500 Are these prices ok? Many thanks!
United Kingdom - 3 Answers
People Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
yeah, sound pretty average, you can expect to pay higher for city accountants, but that comes with the territory. A good accountant can be far more cost effective than a cheap one however.
Answer 2 :
The hourly rate seems acceptable. The VAT registration assumes it takes approx. three hours which could be a little excessive. The tax return price : as we don't know the volume of work involved, but based on the hourly rate we can calculate it will take somewhere in the region of ten hours of work, if you think there is ten hours of work then the price is okay. When considering accountants you may want to look at other factors Many accountants will often do the initial consultation for free, challenge their expertise, have you got the right business structure? Are you maximising profit? What tax breaks and advantages could benefit you? Meet with the accountant face to face, is it someone you could work with? Do they fill you with confidence? It's fairly important to get on with your accountant and this can be best done by looking them in the eyes.. How much experience do they have of your business sector or industry? This can be crucial as various business sectors may have their very own rules and regs. By being familiar with the sector you can expect your accountant to apply all the relevant advantages. Get testimonials, has the accountant got a ready list of clients that are willing to talk to you about the service they have received, if so take the opportunity to talk to them. You may not end up with a client in the same sector, competition and all that, but if far enough away and you are no threat then why not? Price is only part of the picture, it's important but please make sure you consider the whole package and you won't go far wrong.
Answer 3 :
I agree that they do not sound unreasonable. Prices vary considerably around the country but, as Alpha said, there are other factors to take into account. The VAT registration should not take very long but I imagine the quote will include an allowance for time spent in talking to you about VAT and the records required. The point about being able to get on with the accountant is important in my view. Personally I will not take on a client unless it is obvious I can be comfortable with him. The same should apply to you. Can he explain things to you in a way you understand? Most problems between accountants and clients stem from poor communication. Don't let this happen to you.

Intermediate level financial accounting sequence is the hardest part. If you can survive through that then you will be good to go. Unfortunately that is where many fail and end up being marketing majors.

Answer 1 :
i would say it depends on the company and if they run credit reports and such. Also, I'd say company director would probably be company policy too. I dont know of any laws that say you've been bankrupt so you can hold a position in a non government entity, especially if you started the business.
Answer 2 :
It depends on what kind of backfground checking they will do; normally for bank/or financial service companies will check the emploryees' credit histroy. Try other type firms, good luck.
Answer 3 :
I doubt very much if you can be an accountant within a firm of Chartered Accountants, or have your own practice. As to whether you could be an accountant in a company I do not know. If you have been made bankrupt, the Insolvency Service can answer any questions like that, you should have been given an interview when your bankruptcy started and have an information pack, if that doesn't tell you, call them or check their website out. I know they are based in London W1, don't know their details though. Best of luck.
Answer 4 :
Unfortunately no. I know that most accountants are used to being dishonest, and robbing people blind. But once you are declared bankrupt you fall back down to mortal citizen status.
Answer 5 :
A former bankrupt as an Accountant! sorry, that does not sound too good to me, would not give me confidence in you

Are you an accountant? Or know someone who is?

Are you an accountant? Or know someone who is?
Are you/they happy with what you/they do? My father in law is one and is offering my husband to take over after he's studied for it. Anyone think this is a good idea? he's 26 now, we've got 2 kids, and it takes about 5 years to study for it. Thanks

Lets put it this way. All the Accountants i know do not live in council houses or rented accomodation. They do not drive second hand cars or buy their clothes from charity shops. They can afford to buy lots of stuff and have 2 holidays abroad a year. Of course they are happy. It's a job for life.
Answer 2 :
Sounds like an excellent opportunity. Your husband should be able to study part time in the evenings, and if he is up to it (I don't mean that in a bad way, just that you do need a certain aptitude for this line of work, he will have to have good maths) well, then it will be a great career.
