Yes you do. You can study accounting as a vocational degree, or through CPA. Check out your options here http://www.aicpa.org/ You need to have good attention to detail, and numeracy. Accountancy is a great profession - you can even do it from home if you want a family.

While one ought to have a degree - you do not need any qualifications at all. In the UK, 'accountant' is not a protected term, and anyone may call themselves an accountant.
