Should I be an Accountant or Teacher? Really stuck?
I really love maths and love everything about Accounting, though I also like teaching, (don't wanna teach accounting) more Art, weird What should I do, both have their pros and cons, What would YOU Pick, & Why?

Why not do both., You could become and accountant and then teach. I am an accountant, I'm currently attending school for my MBA. This way I'll be able to teach at colleges as well.

Be a teacher! You get great holidays and it's really rewarding at times. But beware - it's VERY hard work, demanding and exhausting. But everyday is different and you'll never get bored. It's also one of those careers that allows you to travel to any part of the world you want; I'm in Egypt now, but people I know are everywhere in the world. And if you do go abroad to teach, you don't have to pay tax. If your in the UK too, the teachers' pension is one of the best you can sign up to.

OMG i never thought i would know someone with the same problem - i dnt no whether to be a teacher or accountant - but i have gone with teacher becuase its more money, rewarding job, holidays, love kids so i choose teaching. gd luck

It is true that teaching has good holidays, but it is a great deal of work, too. If you like working with people then teaching might be for you. If you can be happy working in an office primarily by yourself then perhaps accounting is your calling.

Hi, I'm in year 9 and approaching my GCSEs. When I'm older i would really like to be a accountant. At my school we do core science, english, maths and P.E. Im thinking about do statistics and business. What GCSEs do you suggest for a accountant?

hi :) Im in year 12; i did my GCSEs last year :) generally, your subjects at GCSE wont prevent you get any jobs; most unis and jobs ask for 5 A-C grades, induding Maths and English, so I wouldnt worry about the particualar subjects. However, statistics seems like a good idea, business would be good too. Maths definatly. Maybe economics. btw, i do statistics at A Level, and it is not easy. At all. You will have to work hard, but you sound like you will :) the other thing is make sure that you dont limit your range of subjects. what i mean is, you are only in year 9, so keep your options open! Since as long as I can remember, I have had my heart set on doing Graphic Design. That was what I wanted to do, I didnt contmplate anything else, and I didnt listen when people said I might change my mind. So, i took art and DT at GCSE, which was one of the biggest mistakes of my school life. I thought I liked these subjects, but the sheer amount of work and the pressure, put me off them, and I now want to go into a more technical side of IT. what im saying is that thought i wouldnt change my mind, but i did. I also did AS Levels in Statistics and Pure Mathematics as maths GCSE was sat 2 years early. I then went to college for AS Levels in Human Biology and German and A Levels in PE, Maths, English Combined and Law. The easiest way to get into accounting is to obviously make sure that you are capable at maths, and other subjects that would aid with this would be business studies, economics, statistics and law. The law is one that many people forget, however the contract law is very useful to get a base level knowledge of. You don't have to go to university to study accountancy, if possible, an option is to get work in a accountancy practice and from there you can study for the AAT qualification (not compulsory but recommended), and then the ACCA examinations. Even if you go to university, you only get exemptions from some of the ACCA examinations. It is therefore up to you if you want to go to university for the experience knowing you still have to do exams. I did, and I don't regret it one bit.

Anybody need a bookkeeper/management accountant in Leeds area?
Hi, I am currently employed in Garforth, Leeds in an accounts practice and am seeking a new role. I have been working in practice for 7 years but there is no room for progression within the firm and I am no longer wishing to work in an accounts practice, this is why I am choosing to leave. My ideal role would be that of a bookkeeper/management accountant controlling sales and purchase ledger and bank reconciliations etc and would also include other office duties as needed. I live in Knottingley,so Castleford,Pontefract,Wakefield,Leeds (East or City Centre preferably but open to any other offers), and any other reasonably nearby location would be suitable. I am 23 years old and am AAT qualified and professionally taught SAGE line 50. I also have an excellent knowledge of Excel and Word. My salary expectations are £19-22,000. My husband and I recently changed our accountant to save on bills. We had our last meeting with him (for now) last Wednesday where he finalised our accounts. Yesterday I had an email from him asking whether his cheque was in the post yet. Of course we intended to pay him sometime later this month as we'd always done with the previous guy, but we thought this demand was a bit premature and rude. Do you?

Most accountants are terrible at chasing up bills. I'm just now looking down a list of clients who owe me money and who I need to send reminder letters to. What's just happened to you is certainly not normal, but maybe he's just going through his list as well and chasing everyone he's billed. Most accountants now say in their engagement or terms of business letter that bills are due "on presentation" rather than the usual thirty days - but there are fewer who take that seriously.

If you didnt pay him when you agreed to pay him, hes within his rights and the rules of rudeness to ask you for the money.

Maybe this accountant has his suspicions of why you left the other bloke and it will take time of paying him pay for service until he trusts you also your financial details may show a lack of readily available money for normal bill paying so he is making sure he gets in first good luck I'm sure your honesty will cure him

I not only find it rude, I find it unnecessary. He could have billed you if after a certain amount of time had passed, but today, everyone seems to be so money grubbing, they can't wait three seconds to go by without asking for something. In due time, you would have paid him!

Answer 1 :
If you get your accounting degree, you are most likely going to go the CPA route. With that you would go into either tax or auditing financial statements. With Tax you basically just do taxes, and with auditing you will be out at different clients with a team and audit their financial statements and all of their other numbers. You can also choose to specialize in Information Systems, which is what I did. I think it is a lot better than going the CPA route because you don't have to go through the extra schooling or pass the CPA test (which is killer). We also start out at a higher salary than CPA's. When I got my offer it was $55,000 compared to my friend's offer (with a Master's degree and CPA exam passed) she only received $48,000. IT is a new field and I think it will grow at a tremendous rate! Good luck!

No you don't actually. A degree is not needed to become a chartered accountant - all it does is exempt you from a few of the exams. It is quite an expensive thing to train for though so most people try to get a position with a firm that will pay for the training. Some firms like their trainees to have an accountancy degree, some aren't bothered. Of course, you can also become an accountant in industry and not need to be chartered. There are plenty of those around who are classed as 'qualified by experience'.

im in year 10 now so far i only have done 2 gcse's maths, module 1 = a science module 1 = find out within next 2 weeks

it may be different in your school, but at my old Upper School you had to have a minimum of a B grade in the subject that you wanted to study Hope this helped

What do you do when you're an accountant?
Any accountants out there? Just want a small paragraph explaining the job to do if you're an accountant. I'm considering becoming it... but I am not 100% sure. What do you think? :) Thanks for all your help!

i want to be an accountant when im older but.....?
i want to be an accountant when im older but im doing work experience in a school cus i couldnt find anything to do with accounting or anything similar. but i dont know that if i go on to accounting that i will like it cus i havent had any experience in it. will going to a school stop me from getting a job ? will i like accouting if i dont do work experience ?

If you are detail oriented, like every penny in its place, and don't mind doing the same tasks over an over again, you may like it - on the other hand, if you don't mind when things are off, or you need excitement every day, I wouldn't go into the accounting industry.

Good luck, accounting often gets a poor press, but I trained as an architect in the 90's, then re-focused my life and trained as an accountant in the 00's, I'm now practising and enjoying the different aspects of the job. Why don't you contact a couple of your local accounting companies, to see if they would let you spend a few days through the school holidays, to get an idea of the profession, and enable you to make an informed decision for your future.

do you have to be registered, to be an accountant?
i seem to have the knack for doing self assessments etc., and would like to help others. do i need to be registered? i would charge a small fee! for the past few years i have been doing my husbands accounts and every year we have had a very pleasing tax result. i would just like to help others (all above board i add!) i did start a home study course in basic book keeping. and i just enjoy doing them (sad!)

Hiya this may help.... I am self-employed and i do accounts and book-keeping. I do work for both individuals and i also have companies/ accountancy practises that give me work. I have gained all my experience from a very successful accountant who has taught me everything i know. You don't need any specific qualifications to do what i do HOWEVER you obviously need to know what you are doing and prove that you know what you are doing. Keep going with the book-keeping course and then advertise for some VAT work or book-keeping work as there is a big difference between a book-keeper and an accountant. If you definately want to go down the accountancy route then do the AAT qualification. Most colleges offer this course and it is usually over 1-2 evenings per week for 3 years. Some colleges also do it for one day a week if this would suit you better. If you need anymore advice then feel free to add me as a friend and then contact me. Good luck!

Technically, people you advise could sue you if you get it wrong, so professional indemnity insurance should be considered if you start doing a lot and/or start giving people tax planning advice. But just helping people with their tax returns (as I do) shouldn't cause you any grief, so carry on!
