Is there a market for freelance accountants?
I am a Chartered Accountant with 17 years experience, 7 years in a large audit firm and 10 years working for a large media company, but would like to investigate the possibility of going freelance. From what I can see from trawling the web, most opportunities seem to be in the tax and bookkeeping areas, whereas my skills are in general financial management and commerice.

Answer 1 :
get started as freelance consultant including writing accounts. experience aside you seem to be having some good contacts and you should also explore the possibility of starting with freelance assignments without sacrificing your present job, until you have a fairly good clientele
Answer 2 :
Go to http://www.guru.com/ to find jobs from legitimate companies that you may have the skills to do
Answer 3 :
I'm sure there is a market for general accounting services. Check the requirements for a practicing certificate ( unless you already have this) i also know some people who take short term contracts and temp. They seem to make pretty good money too, although I'm talking about the financial services sector ( I don't know about other industries)
Answer 4 :
If you are in the U.K. - I recommend the folks at the Professional Contractors Group. They have compiled a terrific resource library for freelancers, including Chartered Accountants

Can't stand financial accounting and legal stuff. Love management accounting once they show how the numbers actually work lol.
Answer 2 :
i was like that at the start all id say is youll be so glad when you pass your final exam! good luck =)
Answer 3 :
Intermediate level financial accounting sequence is the hardest part. If you can survive through that then you will be good to go. Unfortunately that is where many fail and end up being marketing majors.
Answer 4 :
I don't mind accounting and in my second year of college. I have taken five classes so far and I am taking my sixth class of accounting.
Answer 5 :
Woohoo accounting! I'm in my third year of studying accounting, and I actually really enjoy it so far.

Can you be an accountant if you've been bankrupt? I know you can't be a company director and stuff like that

Answer 1 :
i would say it depends on the company and if they run credit reports and such. Also, I'd say company director would probably be company policy too. I dont know of any laws that say you've been bankrupt so you can hold a position in a non government entity, especially if you started the business.
Answer 2 :
It depends on what kind of backfground checking they will do; normally for bank/or financial service companies will check the emploryees' credit histroy. Try other type firms, good luck.
Answer 3 :
I doubt very much if you can be an accountant within a firm of Chartered Accountants, or have your own practice. As to whether you could be an accountant in a company I do not know. If you have been made bankrupt, the Insolvency Service can answer any questions like that, you should have been given an interview when your bankruptcy started and have an information pack, if that doesn't tell you, call them or check their website out. I know they are based in London W1, don't know their details though. Best of luck.
Answer 4 :
Unfortunately no. I know that most accountants are used to being dishonest, and robbing people blind. But once you are declared bankrupt you fall back down to mortal citizen status.
Answer 5 :
A former bankrupt as an Accountant! sorry, that does not sound too good to me, would not give me confidence in you

Are you an accountant? Or know someone who is?
Are you an accountant? Or know someone who is?
Are you/they happy with what you/they do? My father in law is one and is offering my husband to take over after he's studied for it. Anyone think this is a good idea? he's 26 now, we've got 2 kids, and it takes about 5 years to study for it. Thanks

Lets put it this way. All the Accountants i know do not live in council houses or rented accomodation. They do not drive second hand cars or buy their clothes from charity shops. They can afford to buy lots of stuff and have 2 holidays abroad a year. Of course they are happy. It's a job for life.
Answer 2 :
Sounds like an excellent opportunity. Your husband should be able to study part time in the evenings, and if he is up to it (I don't mean that in a bad way, just that you do need a certain aptitude for this line of work, he will have to have good maths) well, then it will be a great career.
